Greive Hardware History

Man and woman at a cash register

Sue Eckert’s father, Jim Greive, a World War II veteran, opened the hardware store’s doors in 1955. Jim and his wife Peggy, a fourth-generation Daytonian, decided to stay in the Dayton area instead of heading down to Louisville, Kentucky, where Jim started his career in the hardware business. While Sue attended the University of Dayton, she spent many hours helping her dad in the store. By attending seminars, reading about the business, tackling projects of all kinds, and being in the store day-in and day-out, Sue became a trusted advisor to Greive Hardware shoppers. In 1991, Sue Eckert took ownership of the business. She knew that business and technology were changing, so she always looks for new opportunities to modernize her hardware stores and the way she markets her products. Nine years after Sue took ownership, a second, larger location was opened on Stroop Road. Greive Hardware continues to support the need for products for older homes in the Kettering and Cakwood areas.
